In 1911, the founder of the Company Edmond Dubois, our ancestor, was nicknamed ‘Le Redempteur’ of Champagne by his fellow wine-growers’.

Edmond dubois : fondateur champagne du rédempteurAt the start of the 20th century, the economic situation for the wine growers’ was difficult.

  • The vineyards were devastated by a disease which destroyed the vines : phylloxera.
  • The 1910 harvest was catastrophic and on top of this harsh taxes wiped out the champagne producer's profits.

During this period the lack of regulations such as “Champagne Appellation” made it difficult to protect the integrity of the Champagne region. To protect the name CHAMPAGNE and to ensure other wine growers did not use it the Champagne Producers rebelled.

During the events of 1911, our ancestor, Edmond Dubois was determined to defend the profession and the Champagne tradition, which is why he was surnamed ‘Le Redempteur’ in English, ‘The Saviour’.

Then, the First world war started. In 1918, our village Venteuil was totally destroyed. Delayed by these major events, it was only finally in 1927 that a law protecting Champagne was voted in. This law meant that grapes grown in the Champagne region could only be used to make Champagne. Therefore, we can proudly proclaim today that: “Champagne is only from the Champagne region” :

"Champagne is only from the Champagne region".
